Briton aims to cut the distance on his team-mate and once good friend Nico Rosberg at Monza if only in the F1 championship

Monza is the fastest track on the Formula One circuit, the temple for the tifosi even when as this year the Ferrari drivers are little more than bit-part players in the raucous drama. The central characters are Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Their incidents are just one thing after another for Toto Wolff, the Mercedes motorsport boss, who must be ageing faster than a US president, to deal with.

In the run-up to Sundays Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton modestly distanced himself from some of the great drivers back in the day, although he has never particularly impressed as a history scholar. His rivalry with Rosberg, however, which has been fierce for half their lifetimes, has edged up through the grid of great enmities, so it now finds itself being discussed alongside Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet, Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi and even Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.
