Mercedes British driver suffers break failure in Q1 Rosberg takes Hockenheim pole with rival 16th fastest

Nico Rosberg claimed pole for SundaysGerman Grand Prix here in Hockenheim, after his team-mate and championship rival Lewis Hamilton had a major accident 11 minutes into the first qualifying session. Having already set a time, Hamilton will start the race in 15th place, a major blow to his world championship bid, having closed to within four points of Rosberg at the British Grand Prix.

Valtteri Bottas took advantage of Hamiltons absence and continued his superb form this season. After second place at Silverstone and third in Austria he will start from second here in Germany. The Williams is increasingly looking like the second quickest car to the Mercedes and Bottas was fastest of all, including Mercedes, through the second sector and his team-mate Felipe Massa was a fine third on the grid.
