Finbarr OConnell, the man who helped save Caterham, travels to Abu Dhabi on Wednesday hoping to be the shortest-lived team principal in Formula One history. OConnell, who has represented the administrators Smith & Williamson as the team has grabbed a lifeline through a crowdfunding project, told the Observer: The objective is not for me to go racing. Thats a means to an end. I want to get one of these purchasers were talking to to actually sign a cheque and buy it. I would prefer for there to be a new team principal by the middle of next week.

But Caterham, who are still £400,000 short of their £2.35m target, are just one of a number of struggling teams as F1 lurches from one financial crisis to another. Last month Marussia joined Caterham in administration and in the last two races, in Texas and Brazil, Force India, Sauber and Lotus who all discussed boycotting the US race were in talks with F1s chief executive Bernie Ecclestone in a vain attempt to thrash out a coherent structure for the future of the sport.
