Alonso dedicates first ‘14 podium to Domenicali
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso dedicated the teams first podium of 2014 to former team principal Stefano Domenicali, who resigned from the position last week. The Italian’s decision to step down came as a surprise and was motivated by recent form, with the team having failed to score a podium in the first three races. However that changed on Sunday in China when Alonso took third place behind the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. “I think this podium should be dedicated to Stefano, as everything we do up to July will also be the result of his efforts,” said the Spaniard. Alonso is confident progress has been made since Australia, and even since the Bahrain GP a fortnight ago when he struggled to secure only ninth. “We have definitely made a step forward, because compared to two weeks ago, we have partly closed the gap to the leaders, but we are well aware there’s still a long way to go and we have to keep our feet on the ground. “We felt more competitive and now…being here on the podium is some kind of surprise for us, a nice surprise finally,” he added.
